Google Doodle: National Houseplant Appreciation Day
This Google Doodle celebrates National Houseplant Appreciation Day. It occurs on January 10 each year and is intended to encourage people to give some extra care to their houseplants during the winter months and remind people that we don’t need to lose the vibrancy and warmth of life even in the depths of winter.
This Google Doodle creates a scene out of houseplants that double as houses for the small characters featured throughout the illustration. The flat illustration style, warm, 70s-inspired colour palette and whimsical forms create a vibrant and warm illustration, representing the tone of the day well.

Project Process
A warm 70's inspired colour palette creates a vibe of warmth and joy that matches the goal of the day, especially as it's celebrated in January, a cold winter month in the Northern Hemisphere.
To create a sense of whimsy that corresponded with the stated goal of appreciating the warmth and joy of houseplants, the plant pots were styled as houses. This provides a further visual connection to the theme.
Small characters were designed to create a further sense of warmth and whimsy. They provide a human connection to the illustration and each features a small flower - a motif found repeated throughout the rest of the illustration.
